Hyco Lake (4/17/2004)

bicycle chain

The first ever (to my knowledge) scheduled NCBC round trip day tour to HYCO Lake was completed Saturday 4/17/04. There were 12 cyclist participating, 8 on singles and 4 on tandems. The 12 cyclist managed to ride to HYCO Lake as a team group effort and all arrived together with an avg sp of 20+ mph.. That avg. banked us a little time loss expected for the return . We rode under clear weather and comfortable temperature conditions. We had a bit of ugly head wind on the return 70 miles stage. On the return stage, after climbing out of the HYCO Lake valley, we promptly split into two groups of 7 in front and 5 following. These two groups worked as separate team groups and stayed intact together on the return. The front group finished at about 19+ and the second group finished with 18+. So things went pretty much as planned, but not without a lot of effort on everyone's part. The structure of this ride permitted cyclist to start and finish from a couple north Raleigh area locations. I will recap the attendees in random order and their achievement: Our super dawgs were Tom Sheffield, Tom Fissel, Bill Parquet, Chet Buell, Wayne and Captain Smith Doss with Rear Admiral Claude for 134 miles, our double metric dawgs were Bryan and Capt'n Jack for 118 miles, our century dawgs were Jeff Beasley, Andrew Chan and Donna Powell for 100 miles. I give my thanks for their participating and helping me make this a great day for NCBC cycling. I offer my congratulate to them for having ran like gray hounds all the day.

We have the attached picture taken at lunch break by the lake marina store trip for our memories. Thanks you Andrew for being the only one brave enough to haul the extra weight of a camera.

All 12 now anxiously await the Double Dam ride in May! Are you ready?

Capt'n Jack
