NCBC meeting notes - September '97
These are the notes from the September 8th, 1997 meeting of the NCBC.
The meeting was convened at REI at Crossroads Shopping Center in Cary. 7 members
attended the meeting.
Fall Rally
We spent much of the meeting working through the details of Sunday's (9/14) Fall Rally:
- distances: 50K, 100K, 100, 200K, purposefully hilly
- We have: Pizza (Milano's) and Power Gel (All Star), Bagels (Brueggers)
- Ed Funkhauser or Carol Schroeder will pick up bagels (10 dozen) (need to verify when
Brueggers opens on Sunday)
- Henri will pick up PowerGel
- Tara Richardson will pick up bananas
- Sheila is picking up PowerAid from Coke
- Bruce Rosar and Fredleys will do sag stops
- Have permission to use water hose from Taco Bell
- Henri will purchase Gatorade (if needed) and cookies
- Sheila and Carol will sweep 50K route
- Jim will sweep 200K
- Henri will be staying at starting point
- Henri will call Sheila about using tent
- Jim will ask about getting Pizza delivered
- Jim will check on getting surveyor's tape
- Dave Saussey will copy registration forms and maps and cue sheets
Trailer
As per last agreement from month's meeting, Ed Funkhauser provided information on
covered trailers for possible purchase by the club. Ed had price lists from:
- Leonard Pickup Tops and Trailers
- Raleigh Hitch, Inc. (Haulmark)
- CRTS, Inc. (Wells Cargo)
We discussed and agreed to the following:
- the club would probably be interested in a 5x6x10 or similarly sized trailer
- a group of about three club members should visit each dealer and make a specific
recommendation
- Sheila Miller and Ed Downing were nominated; David Cole agreed to recruit their
services.
Membership fees
Jim noted that he received email claiming that our current membership fee of $15 was
too high given that so much is available for free (e.g., information on the club's web
page).
Ensuing points of discussion:
- Henri Bohl claims NCBC's membership fee is already somewhat less than other cycling
clubs she's aware of
- David Cole stated that, consistent with the club's charter, the NCBC should encourage
cycling even among non-members, and that the club should be of value to both members and
non-members.
- Jim said that the $15 can be quickly recouped from the 10% discount from local bike
shops and from the $5 discount on club rallies.
- David noted that club officers are exempt from the annual membership fee and that anyone
overly concerned with the fee could consider running for club office.
- There was consensus among the attendees that the current membership fee of $15 was
reasonable and that no change was warranted.
Club Officers
Jim stated that election of officers should be next month (October). We agreed:
- We'll defer the election of officers until November and take nominations at the October
meeting
- David will send notice via the mailing list after the Fall Rally informing members of
the upcoming election
- Tim Hunter should include the notice in the October newsletter
- We need to look for candidates who are cycling advocates, and also consider newer
members
- Nominees need not be present to be nominated at the October meeting
Other items
- Mailing list
The Acceptable Use Policy reviewed and accepted as currently written.
(See the NCBC mailing list page.)
- Rally directors
David Cole proposed that Rally directors ride free in all other
Rallies for that same year. Proposal 2nded and approved.
- T Shirts
Alan Mason (designer/printer) has overstock of some 25 shirts he'd like to
sell to the club. We agreed to at least offer to purchase at cost; Henri to follow up with
Carol Schroeder.
- Rude/dangerous riders
Question: How should rude/dangerous riders be handled?
Answer: bring to attention of ride leader / director
- Christmas Party
We set the date for NCBC Christmas party: Friday, December 12 at
Henri Bohl's house.
