David Lee Hunter Memorial Ride

Club president Ted Koreb reported that he was in touch with Daryl Tulimeri, president of the Capital Cycling Club, who was arranging a ride in memory of David Lee Hunter to raise awareness among drivers and cyclists about bicycle safety.

David Lee Hunter

Saturday, April 29th at about 8:19am, while David Lee Hunter, an avid cyclist, was cycling along Hammond Road in Raleigh, a car veered to the right and struck David. He was killed instantly. It was a sad and tragic event that touched every cyclist deeply. After the shock and horror thoughts had passed, a desire to remember David and bring awareness to motorists and cyclists of road safety and the cyclist's right to use the road came to mind. Daryl Tulimeri, President of Capital Cycling Club, organized a ride to do just that.

May 4th, at 6:00pm, about 35 cyclists, including members of NCBC, gathered at the Bicentennial Plaza in Raleigh to help remember David and get the word out on bicycling safety. The ride had a police escort and news coverage by ABC Channel 11. We proceeded on the very road where David was killed. During the ride David's widow, Beverly, and their son Gregory were present and were very touched by our act of support.

David and Beverly were very involved with Haven House, a program that shelters troubled young men who have experienced problems in their homes, communities or schools. If anyone would like to help remember David, you can send a contribution on his behalf to Haven House, 706 Hillsboro St., Suite 102, Raleigh, NC 27603.
