Topic: Traveling with your Bicycle on Amtrak

Presenters: Scott Chilcote and Esther Lumsdon

Last year Scott and Esther decided to participate in a charity bike ride in Tampa, Florida, and do some bicycling in the area afterwards. Scott has to fly several times a year and wanted to try an alternative to the painful, fee-ridden grind that traveling by air has become. So they arranged an extra day or so, and took to the railways. It turns out that traveling with a bike on Amtrak is a whole different experience. Every aspect of the process had different rules, occasional pitfalls, and some pleasant surprises as well. Taking your bike with is surprisingly cheap! But everything has to be arranged properly to make it work. Ever considered trying a sleeper car on the train? We did, and it was unusual (to us) in just about every way.

We have lots of pictures, advice, and anecdotes to share. We'll cover the bad and the good, with a focus on helping anyone else who might be planning to go by rail. Everyone's welcome. If you have your own train travel story, please join in!

We'll meet to eat at 6:00, and the club meeting will start at 7:00.

Help Wanted - Volunteers

NCBC is preparing for our 2012 Spring Rally next month, we are teaming with Lifetime Fitness in Cary to put on an event that will be an outstanding start to this year's riding season. This event will include rest stops with refreshments, a choice of ride lengths ranging from 50 Kilometers (31 miles) to a full 100 mile workout. We need some help to make this event a success. We need a few people to staff a rest stop, help mark the routes, ride sag, and help with registering riders. Everyone is welcome! If you wouldn't mind helping out, please let us know.

I'll be leading a 62-mile New Year's Day ride from Macgregor Village Shopping Center at 10:00 on Sunday, January 1.  No registration, just a ride.  One store stop at 40 miles, but others store are on route.   I'll probably ride at 18-19 mph pace; others may be faster or slower.   Precipitation of any type cancels. [Cue Sheet]

There will also be a pair of 38-mile rides starting at the same time and place, with a store stop at the 17-mile mark.  Bob Oderkirk will lead a group at a 15-17 mph pace, and Zonda Hillman will lead a group at a 13-15 mph pace.  [Cue Sheet] [Map]
